How power sharing actually works
Multi-port adapters split their budget by fixed rules (e.g., 100W solo becomes 65W + 30W with two ports active). Two consequences worth knowing before you buy:
Renegotiation blips. Plugging into a second port briefly cuts power to the first while contracts re-form — laptops flash to battery for a second. Normal, but annoying mid-video-call; premium units (Apple's dual-port, SmallRig 240W) renegotiate fastest.
The math test. Add the wattage of everything you'll connect simultaneously, then add 20% headroom. A MacBook Air (35W draw) + iPhone (20W) + AirPods (5W) = 60W — a 65W 3-port fits exactly; a "45W 3-port" does not, whatever the marketing says.
