How power sharing actually works

Multi-port adapters split their budget by fixed rules (e.g., 100W solo becomes 65W + 30W with two ports active). Two consequences worth knowing before you buy:

Renegotiation blips. Plugging into a second port briefly cuts power to the first while contracts re-form — laptops flash to battery for a second. Normal, but annoying mid-video-call; premium units (Apple's dual-port, SmallRig 240W) renegotiate fastest.

The math test. Add the wattage of everything you'll connect simultaneously, then add 20% headroom. A MacBook Air (35W draw) + iPhone (20W) + AirPods (5W) = 60W — a 65W 3-port fits exactly; a "45W 3-port" does not, whatever the marketing says.

Size for the ports you will actually use at once, then check the manufacturer's own table before buying.

Plug the laptop in first, and into port one. On most multi-port units the highest-wattage contract is assigned to whichever device negotiates first, and port one is the only one wired for the top rail. Plugging a phone in first can leave a laptop stuck on a 30W contract until you unplug and re-seat it.
