Wattage · The PD 3.0 ceiling
100W is a ceiling, not a marketing number.
20V × 5A = 100W, and until PD 3.1 arrived that was the hard maximum of USB-C Power Delivery. It is still the most useful single number in charging: enough for any laptop except the biggest, and the point where a 5A e-marked cable stops being optional.
Why the number stops here
Standard Power Range PD tops out at four fixed voltages — 5V, 9V, 15V and 20V — and 5A of current. 20V × 5A is 100W, full stop. Anything above it requires Extended Power Range (PD 3.1), which adds 28V, 36V and 48V rails; that is the subject of the 240W USB-C guide. So when a listing claims 120W, 160W or 200W, it is describing a total across several ports, not a contract any single device can negotiate. On this page, 100W means 100W to one port.
The 5A requirement is absolute: a cable without an e-marker chip declaring 5A caps the link at 3A/60W. Chargers in this class usually include one; if yours did not, the e-marked cable guide covers what to look for.

Single-port 100W versus 100W total
Two products carry the same 100W badge and behave completely differently. A single-port 100W brick gives one device the whole budget every time. A 100W four-port unit gives one device the whole budget only while the other three ports are empty; attach a phone and the laptop port typically drops to 65W, and with three accessories connected it can sit near 45W. Sizing around 100W
Down to 65W if no laptop in the house exceeds an ultrabook — 100W is genuine overkill there, and the price gap is real. Up to 140W for a 16″ MacBook Pro or any machine whose stock brick exceeds 100W. Up to 160W or 200W only when you need to run several devices at once, since those numbers are shared totals rather than bigger single contracts. Head-to-heads: 65W vs 100W and 100W vs 140W. FAQ
Do I need an e-marked cable for a 100W charger?
Yes. 100W is 20V at 5A, and only a cable with an e-marker chip declaring 5A is allowed to carry that. On any other cable the charger falls back to 60W.
Is 100W safe for a phone?
Completely. The phone negotiates a 9V contract and draws 20-45W; the adapter never pushes more than the device asks for. A 100W charger treats AirPods as gently as a 5W cube does.
Why is my 100W multi-port charger giving my laptop only 65W?
Because the 100W is a shared total. Most multi-port units drop the primary port to 65W as soon as a second port is in use. The split table on the packaging tells you the exact allocation.
