Four ports is where a charger stops being an accessory and becomes desk infrastructure. It also stops being pocketable, which is the trade: a corded body with a real heat budget, one high-watt port for the laptop, and three that step down as the desk fills up.

The lesson is blunt: a 100W 4-port is not a 100W laptop charger on a busy desk. Fill every port and the laptop is on 45W — enough to charge a MacBook Air overnight, not enough to hold a 14″ Pro steady during a video export. What four ports is for
The defining feature is not the number four — it is that the unit never moves. Cable length becomes a routing question rather than a portability one. Renegotiation blips stop being a curiosity and become a daily irritation: plug a phone in mid-call and the laptop drops to battery for a second while contracts re-form, several times a day on a 4-port unit. Better controllers ride through it faster, and that is one of the few things worth paying for here.
A realistic desk allocation on a 140W unit: laptop on C1, a portable monitor or dock on C2, phone on C3, and the A port on a desk lamp, a controller or an old set of headphones. Is a 100W 4-port charger enough for a MacBook Pro and three accessories?
For a 14″ Pro it charges but does not fast-charge, because with all four ports busy the laptop port typically drops to 45W. For a 16″ machine it is not enough — that combination wants 140W or more of total budget.
Why does my laptop disconnect for a second when I plug in my phone?
The adapter has to renegotiate every active contract when the port map changes, so power briefly stops on all ports. The laptop reports a second on battery. It is normal behaviour, and faster controllers make it shorter rather than eliminating it.
Do I need PD 3.1 on a 4-port charger?
Only if a single port must exceed 100W. PD 3.1 adds the 28V, 36V and 48V rails that make 140W and above possible; below that, standard PD 3.0 at 20V covers everything, and PD 3.1 above 100W also requires a 5A e-marked cable.
