One charger for the whole desk.

Add up what is actually plugged in at once, add 20%, and buy that number in a single multi-port unit. A 100W four-port charger replaces four bricks, four outlets and the daily hunt for which cable goes where.

Budget the watts first

Multi-port chargers share one power budget, so the only number that matters is the simultaneous total: what genuinely charges at the same time — not everything you own — plus roughly 20% headroom.

Then read the vendor's port-split table, which decides whether the budget works. A typical 100W four-port unit gives 100W on the top USB-C port alone, roughly 65W + 30W with a second C port in use, and less again with all four occupied. Why one unit beats four bricks

Outlet count: four bricks means a strip, and wall-wart bodies block adjacent sockets. Thermal headroom: a 100W GaN unit at 60W load runs cooler than a 65W brick pinned at its ceiling — see why chargers get hot. Allocation: one budget flows to whatever needs it, so the laptop gets its full 65W once the phone is full. Standby draw is minor: efficiency rules hold no-load consumption to a fraction of a watt, so four idle bricks cost pennies a year.

Port allocation and cables

Assign ports deliberately and label them once. Put the laptop on the highest-priority USB-C port — usually nearest the edge, named in the manual — because it keeps its full profile as the others fill up. Give the phone the next C port; leave USB-A for a watch dock or keyboard. Avoid hot-plugging mid-charge: renegotiation drops every port to a safe state for a moment before the new split applies.

Use 1m cables at the desk, 2m only where you need reach — longer thin cable means more voltage drop. Above 60W you need a 5A e-marked cable; above 100W an EPR-rated 240W cable end to end (the cable guide, e-marked cables explained).

Give the charger air, and never put it under the laptop. Desktop units dump heat through the shell, and a 100W brick trapped under a warm aluminium laptop will throttle within the hour. Stand it on a hard surface with clearance on at least three sides.

Wall unit or desktop unit?

Below about 100W, a folding-prong wall charger is fine and travels with you. Above it, a desktop unit with a captive AC cord wins: the mass sits on the desk rather than hanging from the socket, with room for a bigger heatsink and usually more ports. Does a 100W charger give 100W to every port?

No. The total is shared and the split changes as ports fill: 100W on one USB-C port alone, roughly 65W plus 30W with two in use.

Is one multi-port charger better than several small ones?

Usually yes: fewer outlets used, cooler operation at partial load, and power that flows to whichever device needs it.

Why does my laptop slow down when I plug my phone into the same charger?

The charger renegotiated its split to free watts for the new device. Normal behaviour — assign the laptop to the highest-priority port to minimise what it loses.
