Retractable adapters: one less cable, one more wear item.
A reel-in cable inside the housing removes the thing people actually forget. It also makes the cable non-replaceable, and the cable is the part that fails first. That single trade decides whether this format is brilliant for you or a waste of money.
What you gain
Nothing to forget. The most common charging failure on a trip is not a dead brick, it is a cable left in a hotel drawer. A built-in cable cannot be separated from the adapter, which is the whole point.
Less volume than charger plus cable. A coiled two-foot lead takes more space in a bag than the few millimetres the spool adds to the body.
A known-good cable. No guessing whether the lead in your hand is a 60W one or a charge-only freebie — the silent bottleneck described in the cable guide stops being a variable.

The 60W line is the one to internalise. If your laptop is content on 60W or less, the built-in lead is fine on its own. If it wants 100W or 140W, you will be using the unit's separate USB-C port with your own e-marked cable — at which point you are carrying a cable anyway and much of the format's advantage evaporates.
The failure mode, precisely
Retraction concentrates stress in two places. First, the strain relief where the cable leaves the housing: every retraction drags the same short section over the same lip until a work-hardened conductor breaks, and charging then stops when the cable is nudged. Second, the spool, which passes current from a rotating drum to a fixed board through slip rings or a wound ribbon; wear there gives the same intermittency with no visible damage.
Neither is repairable behind welded plastic. Buy the format knowing the adapter is a consumable: when the cable goes, the charger goes with it.
When it is genuinely worth it
Worth it: a one-bag travel kit where the phone is the main device; a car, where a loose cable slides under the seat — see car adapters; a spare charger that lives in a work bag; anyone who replaces more than two lost cables a year.
Not worth it: a fixed desk, where a corded desktop unit is better in every respect; any laptop above 60W; a bedside table where the cable never moves.

How many watts can a built-in retractable cable carry?
Usually 60W, since a 5A e-marked conductor needs thicker copper and a stiffer jacket than a spool handles well. Units rated above 60W generally expect you to use a separate port with your own e-marked cable for the high-power device.
Are retractable chargers good for laptops?
