One metric decides this list: watts per cubic inch, with folding prongs as a hard requirement. Gallium nitride is what makes 65W fit in a body the size of an old 20W brick.

How we ranked these

Five criteria, the same on every list here and on the master roundup: delivered wattage under sustained load, not the shell number; protocol correctness — PD's 5V, 9V, 15V and 20V rails, PPS where claimed, PD 3.1 above 28V; safety certification, where a missing UL or ETL listing disqualifies; watts per dollar and per cubic inch; and track record — recalls, continuous-full-load behaviour. Sources are published specs and certification records, not star ratings or invented prices.

The sort here is purely physical: watts per cubic inch and watts per gram, with folding prongs a requirement rather than a bonus. GaN roughly halves the volume of a 60W-class brick against older silicon designs, so every pick below is GaN. Ties break on whether the body stays put in a loose airport or hotel socket.

Compactness has a real cost: single-port units cannot share, and small bodies run warmer at sustained full load, with less surface area to shed heat. Measure the width across the faceplate: that is the dimension deciding whether a charger blocks the second socket on a US duplex outlet — a tall, narrow body clears where a wide, flat one does not.

FAQ

Why are GaN chargers so much smaller?

Gallium nitride switches faster and wastes less energy as heat than silicon, so the transformer and heatsink shrink dramatically. In practice a 65W GaN charger occupies roughly half the volume of an older 61W silicon brick at the same output.

Do small chargers run hotter?

They run warmer at sustained full load, because a smaller shell has less surface area to shed heat. That is normal and designed for, but it is a reason to prefer a larger desktop unit where a charger will sit at full output for hours.

Is a compact charger less safe?

Not if it is UL or ETL listed. Size comes from the semiconductor, not from removing protection circuitry. An uncertified small charger is a different matter, and no uncertified adapter appears on these lists.

Should I buy single-port or multi-port if I want the smallest option?

Single-port is always smaller for a given wattage, but two single-port chargers are bulkier than one two-port unit. If you routinely charge two devices, a compact multi-port is the smaller total load in the bag.
