Car adapters: the socket sets the ceiling, not the box.
A car charger advertising 160W is making a claim about its own electronics, not about your vehicle. The accessory socket sits behind a fuse — commonly 10A, 15A or 20A — and that fuse, plus the wiring behind it, is the real limit on what you can pull while driving.
What a 12V socket can actually deliver
The rail is nominally 12V but sits near 13.8V with the engine running. Available power is that voltage times the circuit's fuse rating, minus losses — and contact resistance, thin factory wiring and a shared circuit all take a bite. Treat the fuse figure as a ceiling you should not sit against.

Your owner's manual lists the accessory-circuit fuse as "power outlet" or "cigar lighter". Two sockets on one 15A fuse share that budget, which is why two 100W chargers pop fuses that either alone never would.
Why car units run hotter than wall units
A wall adapter steps a high voltage down. A car adapter starts at 13.8V and has to boost to reach the PD 20V rail laptops request, so 100W out means pulling over 8A in, through a spring contact designed for a cigarette lighter. That is why a 100W car charger is larger and warmer than a 100W GaN wall brick.
Poor socket contact raises resistance, resistance raises heat, heat softens the plastic barrel, and a deformed barrel makes contact worse. That feedback loop, not component failure, is what kills most cheap units.
What separates a good car adapter from a cheap one
A real fuse in the tip. The replaceable glass or ceramic fuse behind the centre pin is the protection between a fault and your vehicle wiring. Units without one exist and should be avoided.
Input filtering. Automotive power is noisy — alternator ripple, load dump at cranking, transients from every other device on the bus. Adequate input capacitance is invisible on a spec sheet and exactly what gets deleted to hit a price. Symptoms: stereo interference, and devices that drop out when the engine starts.
Thermal protection. A certified unit rolls back output as it heats; an uncertified one keeps pushing.
Honest port splits. A "65W" two-port car charger usually means 45W plus 20W — the same arithmetic as any 2-port adapter.

FAQ
Can a car charger drain my battery?
Only slowly, and only if the socket stays live with the ignition off. Idle draw from a modern charger is small, but on a car left parked for weeks with an ageing battery it can be the difference between starting and not. Unplug it for long layups.
Why does my laptop charge slower in the car than at home?
Many 100W-rated car units reach their full figure only with a single port in use and the engine running; a shared socket circuit tightens it further.
Do I need PPS in a car charger?
If you carry a Galaxy S Ultra or a Tab Ultra, yes — those devices need a PPS profile to reach 45W, in the car exactly as at the wall. For iPhones and most other hardware, plain Power Delivery is enough.
