Two-pin ungrounded Type I plugs are common on small double-insulated appliances, so an ungrounded adapter is not automatically a bad adapter — it just cannot carry an earth through for gear that needs one.
Why the adapter you buy actually matters here
Type I is the head budget universal adapters most often get wrong. The V angle is unforgiving: a few degrees out and the plug either will not enter or contacts only on the pin tips, which shows up as a charger that drops out when the cable is nudged. Adapters made for the Australian market carry the RCM compliance mark; on US-bought units, look for a fused body and a firm, positive click when the head slides out.
Australian sockets are also commonly fitted with an individual switch. A device that is plugged in and doing nothing is far more often a switch that is off than an adapter that has failed — check the switch first.

Works as-is vs genuinely needs a converter
Works on a plug adapter alone: phones, tablets, laptops, mirrorless and DSLR battery chargers, drone chargers, e-readers, power banks, electric toothbrushes, cordless shavers, portable monitors. All are switching supplies with a 100–240V input range.
