A desktop unit with a mains cord sits on the desk rather than hanging off a socket — easier on the outlet, better for heat, harder to pack: wall versus desktop chargers.
What it is genuinely good at
Consolidation. A laptop, a tablet, a phone, earbuds and a smartwatch all end up on one cord, and legacy USB-A accessories keep working without a dongle. For a permanent desk it beats a two-port wall-plug GaN and stays cooler under sustained load, and fixed-rail PD is exactly what a MacBook Air or 14-inch MacBook Pro wants.
Where it falls short, and who should skip it

USB-A ports are dead weight once accessories have moved to USB-C: one topping out in the teens of watts wastes a slot. And do not assume PPS — a high fixed-rail total says nothing about the programmable band. Skip it if your desk centres on a 16-inch MacBook Pro, you want portability, or you need a guaranteed PPS band.

Verdict
Buy one if your desk is a MacBook Air or 65W-class ultrabook with small accessories and you want one cord for all of it. Not for a 16-inch MacBook Pro, and not on the headline — the per-port table decides what the laptop keeps.
