Wall vs desktop: folding pins or a detachable cord.
A wall charger plugs its own pins into the outlet and travels. A desktop charger sits on the desk with a detachable AC cord, which lets it run four ports at sustained high wattage without cooking itself or hanging off the wall plate.

Where each one wins
Wall wins on travel and on the bedside. Folding pins mean nothing snags in a bag, there is no cord to lose, and a 65W GaN wall unit will run an ultrabook and a phone from a hotel outlet. For international trips it also pairs cleanly with a plug adapter — every USB-C charger sold in the US is 100–240V, so you need a plug shape, not a voltage converter. Desktop wins on sustained multi-device output. Above roughly 140W, a wall-mounted brick becomes heavy enough to sag out of a worn outlet, and the sealed body limits how long it can hold peak output. A corded desktop unit has room for a larger heatsink, keeps four to six ports fed, and puts the cables at desk height where you actually use them. Verdict: wall up to 100W, desktop above it or beyond three ports
Buy a wall charger if the unit will move — bag, hotel, bedside — or if its top rating is 100W or less. In that range the thermals are fine, the folding plug is worth real money in convenience, and the size penalty of a corded unit buys you nothing. Buy a desktop charger when the unit will not move and has to feed four or more devices, or when its rating is 140W and above: sustained output, port count and outlet manners all favour it, and the detachable cord is what makes those wattages practical. The compromise most people land on is a 100W-class wall unit as the one charger they own, which travels and still runs a laptop plus accessories. FAQ
Is a desktop charger safer than a wall charger?
Neither format is inherently safer — certification is what matters. Desktop units do run cooler at high sustained output because there is more room for heatsinking, which helps component life.
Can I take a desktop charger abroad?
Usually yes, and more easily than a wall unit: replace the IEC mains cord with one for the local plug shape. The charger itself is almost always 100 to 240V.
Why do heavy wall chargers fall out of outlets?
Weight and leverage. A worn socket loses grip on the pins of a heavy brick. Above about 140W, or in old outlets, a corded desktop unit or a short extension lead solves it.
