Wattage · A total, not a rail
120W is a budget shared across ports — there is no 120W rail.
USB-C Power Delivery has no 120W contract. Standard PD stops at 20V/5A = 100W, and Extended Power Range restarts at 28V/5A = 140W. So a charger badged 120W is doing one of two things, and telling them apart is the whole job of this page.

None of those is a general-purpose 120W. If you want more than 100W into a single device from a standards-compliant charger, the next real step is 140W PD 3.1 — the mechanism is described in the Power Delivery explainer.
How the split behaves in practice
Take a typical 120W three-port GaN charger. On its own, the top USB-C port negotiates the full 100W. Attach a phone to the second USB-C port and the unit re-runs both contracts: the laptop usually settles around 65–90W while the phone takes 20–30W. Add a USB-A device and the laptop drops again. The total never exceeds 120W, and the primary port never exceeds 100W — the extra 20W over a 100W charger exists purely to stop your accessories from stealing from the laptop.

Size up or step back
Step back to 100W if you only ever charge one laptop at a time — you lose nothing on the primary port. Size up to 140W if you want a genuinely larger single-port contract, or to 160W and 200W if the problem is the number of devices rather than the size of any one of them. Is there a 120W USB-C PD standard?
No. Standard Power Range PD ends at 100W (20V/5A) and Extended Power Range begins at 140W (28V/5A). A 120W charger is a multi-port total, or it is using a brand-specific protocol outside the USB-C PD standard.
Will a 120W charger charge my Dell XPS 15 at full speed?
It will charge it at 100W, not the 130W Dell's own adapter supplies. Dell's 130W USB-C brick runs 20V at 6.5A, above the 5A the standard allows, so no third-party charger can match it.
Does a 120W charger charge my phone faster than a 30W one?
No. Your phone requests the same contract from both. The only exception is a phone built around a proprietary 120W protocol, which needs that maker's own charger and cable to reach the advertised speed.
