Charging a laptop over USB-C.
A USB-C port that charges is not the same as a USB-C port. Get the port right, then the wattage, then the cable — in that order — and one 65W or 100W brick replaces the proprietary block that came in the box.
Step one: does that port charge?
USB-C is a connector, not a capability. On a laptop, only ports wired for PD sink can take power in, and manufacturers mark them with a small battery or lightning glyph beside the socket, or document them as "USB-C with Power Delivery". Thunderbolt-marked ports almost always charge; a bare USB-C port on a budget machine often does not, and a port labelled only with the SuperSpeed logo may be data and display only. Step two: match the wattage class

Undersized adapters do not damage anything; they lose an argument with the workload. A 45W brick on a laptop pulling 60W under compile or game load leaves the battery slowly draining, and Windows will often say so directly — "Your PC isn't charging as fast as it could" is the operating system telling you the negotiated contract is below what the firmware wanted. The rule is the same as everywhere else on this site: round up, because a bigger adapter is always safe.
Step three: the cable, and the dock arithmetic
Above 60W the cable must be e-marked for 5A, or the source withholds its high-current profiles and you are capped at 60W with no error message. This is the most common reason a 100W charger underperforms on a laptop, and it costs a few dollars to eliminate.
Docks and monitors add a second subtraction. A "100W" dock does not deliver 100W to the laptop: it runs its own hubs, Ethernet controller and downstream ports from the same supply, so the figure that matters is the power delivery to host spec, typically 85–90W from a 100W-class dock, and less again if you are also charging a phone from its front port. A monitor with USB-C power delivery is the same story — check the host figure, not the adapter rating.
Barrel-jack laptops
Machines without USB-C charging can sometimes be fed through a PD trigger cable that presents a barrel plug and requests a fixed rail. It works, with three caveats worth taking seriously: PD has no 19V rail, so a 19V laptop is being run at 20V; the tip size and polarity must match exactly; and you lose whatever proprietary handshake the OEM brick performed, which on some models means the machine charges but refuses to run at full clocks. Unlike USB-C-to-USB-C charging, this is the one place where voltage on the label still has to match the hardware. Can any USB-C charger charge any USB-C laptop?
Electrically yes, if the laptop's port supports charging. Whether it charges fast enough depends on the wattage, and above 60W on the cable being e-marked for 5A.
Will a lower-wattage charger damage my laptop?
No. It negotiates a smaller contract and charges slowly, or holds the battery steady rather than gaining. The only downside is speed.
Why does my laptop say 'plugged in, not charging'?
Usually the adapter supplies less than the machine is consuming under load, or the port is a data-only USB-C port, or a 3A cable is capping a 100W charger at 60W.
Can I charge a gaming laptop over USB-C?
Most accept a USB-C top-up and will charge while idle, but a 100W contract cannot cover a 200W system under load. Use USB-C for travel and the OEM brick for gaming.
