Car chargers and what 12V can really give you.

The socket, not the charger, sets your ceiling. Most 12V accessory outlets sit on a 10–20A fuse, which puts the practical limit around 120–180W — and the socket's own contacts get hot long before that fuse ever opens.

Working out your socket's ceiling

Find the fuse box legend — inside the lid or in the manual — and look for CIG, ACC or PWR OUTLET. Fuse rating × system voltage is the theoretical maximum: system voltage is about 12.6V with the engine off and 13.8–14.4V with the alternator running, so a running engine buys a little headroom.

Several sockets often share one fuse, so a dashcam or tyre inflator on the same circuit eats into the budget. And the socket was designed to heat a coil for seconds, not carry 10A continuously — the spring contacts are the weak point, and a worn socket adds resistance that becomes heat at the joint.

Why cheap car chargers overheat

A car charger is a DC-DC converter: it steps 12–14V down to 5V, or boosts it to 9V, 15V or 20V for Power Delivery. That conversion is 85–93% efficient, so a 65W unit sheds 5–11W inside a plastic barrel with almost no surface area, in a socket recess with no airflow, in a cabin that can exceed 60°C. Budget units cope by throttling within minutes, which is why a "65W" bargain charger tops a laptop up far more slowly than the number suggests.

A good unit has a metal body or real heatsink, a published PD profile table rather than a bare wattage claim, and a snug fit — a loose one arcs, which means heat and dropouts. Certification matters as much as on the wall: see charger safety and certifications.

Your car's built-in USB ports

Many USB-A ports on infotainment systems are wired for data at 0.5–1A (2.5–5W), which is why a phone plugged in for navigation can lose charge while running. Newer vehicles fit USB-C ports at 15–27W, some 45–60W in rear-seat positions. Look for a battery icon next to the port: a plain USB symbol usually means data and trickle power, a battery marking means charge-capable.

Unplug when you park, if your socket stays live. Many cars keep the 12V outlet energised with the ignition off. A charger's idle draw is tiny; a phone or tablet charging overnight is not, and a weekend of it can leave a marginal battery unable to crank.

Cables and choosing the size

Cable rules from the wall apply: over 60W you need a 5A e-marked cable, and a long thin cable to a rear seat costs real voltage. Coiled cables are usually thin — fine for a phone, wrong for a laptop. Details in the USB-C cable guide.
