USB-A adapters: a compatibility choice, not a fast one.

The flat rectangular port has a hard ceiling around 12W in ordinary use and roughly 18W with a proprietary fast-charge scheme. It cannot do Power Delivery at all. Buy one because of the cables and devices you already own — never because you want speed.

Why USB-A cannot go fast

Power Delivery negotiates over the CC pin, and USB-A does not have one. Without that channel there is no contract, so the port defaults to 5V and the only variable is current. Everything sold as "fast" USB-A charging is a workaround built on top of that limitation.

Two practical corollaries. An A-to-C cable cannot deliver Power Delivery no matter what either end is rated for — the spec caps it at 5V, and a compliant cable identifies itself with a resistor that holds current at or below 3A. And a phone that fast-charges in 30 minutes on a USB-C brick will take two hours or more on the same charger's USB-A port. The full comparison is at USB-A versus USB-C.

When USB-A is still the right answer

It stops being a compromise the moment the device on the other end cannot use anything better. Genuine cases: e-readers and older Kindles that draw a couple of watts anyway; dash cameras and GPS units supplied with A-to-mini or A-to-micro cables; game controllers such as the DualShock 4; Bluetooth speakers, headlamps and bike lights with micro-USB inlets; USB desk fans and lamps; older cordless vacuums and trimmers. For every one of those, a 12W USB-A port charges at exactly the same speed a 240W desktop unit would, because the device is the bottleneck.

The second honest case is the cable drawer. If you own six A-to-micro and A-to-Lightning cables that work, one USB-A port on a multi-port adapter saves buying six replacements. That is a real reason. Wanting the phone charged faster is not.

Watch the shared rail on multi-port units. On many 3-port chargers the USB-A output is wired to the same internal rail as the second USB-C port, so plugging a legacy cable in drops the neighbouring port's budget even though the total is nowhere near exhausted. If a laptop suddenly reports slow charging when you attach a controller, move the laptop to port one.

FAQ

Can a USB-A port fast-charge an iPhone?

No. Fast charging on an iPhone requires a Power Delivery contract, which needs USB-C at the charger end. A USB-A port with an A-to-Lightning cable charges at roughly 5 to 12W, which is why the same phone takes several times longer.

Is USB-A being discontinued?

Not quickly. New phones, laptops and tablets have moved to USB-C, but the installed base of USB-A cables and accessories is enormous, so multi-port chargers keep including one A port. Treat it as a legacy convenience rather than something to design a purchase around.

Does a USB-A to USB-C cable support Power Delivery?

No. Without the CC channel there is no negotiation, so the connection stays at 5V regardless of how capable the charger and phone are. A compliant cable limits current to 3A, giving a 15W ceiling at best.
