Iceland: Type F at the hotel, 12V in the car.

Icelandic sockets are Type F at 230V / 50Hz — the Schuko recess with earth clips, which also takes the two-pin Type C Europlug. But a Ring Road trip spends more hours in a rental car than in a room, so the adapter is only half the answer.

Same socket as Germany, Netherlands and Spain, so a Europe adapter bought for any of those works here. If you are connecting through the UK, that leg needs a Type G head as well.

The car side, which matters more

Iceland is driven, not commuted. A Ring Road day runs 6–10 hours with the phone on navigation, a camera charging and often a passenger streaming — all of it far from a wall socket. Two things carry that load.

A 12V car charger. Icelandic rental cars use the same 12V accessory socket as American ones, so a US car charger works with no adapter at all. Size it properly: a 45W-class USB-C car charger keeps a phone climbing while navigation runs, and a 65W-class one will also hold a laptop steady. See car chargers and car adapter types.

A power bank, charged overnight from the room's Type F socket, for the hours out of the car at waterfalls and glaciers. Spare lithium batteries fly in the cabin, never in checked bags — the watt-hour limits are in airline rules for chargers.

Cold changes what your battery can do, not what your charger can do. Lithium cells deliver less usable capacity at low temperature and many devices refuse to fast-charge below roughly 0°C until they warm up. A phone that "won't charge" in a parked car in February is usually a cold battery, not a broken adapter — warm it in a pocket and try again.

Adapter or converter?

Read the input line on the charger housing. 100–240V ~ 50/60Hz means it is dual-voltage and needs a plug adapter only — that is every USB-C charger sold in the US, plus laptop bricks, camera and drone battery chargers, and toothbrush bases. Icelandic 230V is inside the range they were designed for.

A voltage converter is only for single-voltage 120V equipment with a heating element or a motor: hair dryers, curling irons, travel kettles. Those labels have no range, and 230V ends them. What plug does Iceland use?

Type F, the Schuko socket, at 230V / 50Hz. It also accepts the two-pin Type C Europlug, so a standard continental Europe adapter works.

Do I need a converter in Iceland?

Not for chargers. Anything marked 100-240V - phones, tablets, laptops, cameras, drones - needs only a plug adapter. Fixed-120V hair dryers and travel kettles are the exceptions that need a converter.

Will my US car charger work in an Icelandic rental?

Yes. The 12V accessory socket is identical to an American one, so a USB car charger plugs straight in with no adapter.

Why does my phone charge slowly in the cold?

Lithium batteries accept less current at low temperature, and most phones deliberately throttle or pause fast charging until the cell warms up. It is protective behaviour, not a fault in the charger.
