Charging for battery health.

Three things age a lithium-ion cell: cycle count, time held at a high state of charge, and temperature. Every worthwhile habit targets one of those. Everything else — including most of what you have read about calibration and full discharges — targets nothing.

What a cycle actually is

A cycle is 100% of the battery's capacity used, in any number of sittings: two days of 50% drain is one cycle, not two, so plugging in more often does not cost you cycles. Apple rates iPhone 15 and later to retain 80% of original capacity at 1000 complete cycles under ideal conditions; earlier iPhones were rated to 500, and most Android makers publish figures in the 500–1000 range. At typical use that is three to five years before you notice.

The 20–80% rule, honestly

Lab data on shallow cycling is real: keeping a cell in the middle of its voltage range, away from the top and bottom, extends cycle life. But the arithmetic bites: charging 20 to 80 uses 60% of capacity per cycle, so you need more cycles for the same work and carry 40% less usable range every day. Over three years the net gain is modest — perhaps 88% health instead of 84%, with a smaller battery the entire time.

Do not chase the battery health percentage. The reported figure is an algorithm's estimate, it steps in whole numbers, and it can move a point either way after a few odd charge patterns. Judge the battery on how long the phone lasts in real use.

Heat, again

Temperature does more damage than anything else here, and it is the one thing you control directly. Apple specifies a 0–35°C operating window; sustained charging above it is where capacity loss accelerates sharply. The practical rules: take thick cases off during a fast charge, keep a plugged-in phone off car dashboards and sunlit windowsills, avoid gaming while fast-charging, and keep the adapter somewhere it can breathe — the heat guide explains why a buried brick throttles.

Fast charging by itself is not the villain. Modern phones taper aggressively as they fill and manage cell temperature actively; a 45W PPS charge that stays cool is gentler than a 15W charge that cooks in a case. The mechanism to avoid is heat, not watts — PPS exists specifically to move conversion loss out of the phone and into the adapter.

Storage and long gaps

If a device is going in a drawer for months, leave it near 50% and power it off. A cell stored at 100% ages faster; a cell stored near 0% risks falling below the protection threshold, after which it may refuse to charge. Check it every six months and top it back to 50%.

Is the 20-80% rule worth following?

It helps most for devices that live on a charger all day, where the lost range costs nothing. For a phone you carry and replace every two or three years, the capacity retained is small relative to the daily inconvenience.

Does fast charging damage the battery?

Not directly. Heat does, and fast charging produces heat — so a cool 45W charge is gentler than a hot 15W one.

Should I let my phone die completely once a month?

No. Modern fuel gauges need no calibration, a full discharge spends a cycle for nothing, and repeated deep discharges stress the cell.

Does using a third-party charger hurt battery health?

No, provided it is certified. The device requests its own voltage and current, so a UL- or ETL-listed USB-C PD adapter behaves identically to the one in the box.
