No mainstream laptop draws 240W over USB-C today. The 48V rail exists for future hardware and for monitors and docks; what buyers actually get from a 240W unit is a shared budget large enough that nothing throttles.
Where each one wins
140W wins on portability and price per watt for one machine. If you carry a 16″ MacBook Pro to an office, a 140W brick is the smallest thing that fast-charges it. Apple's own 140W is a single-port wall unit; third-party 140W units add two or three ports and still travel.
240W wins as a desk hub. Put a 16″ laptop on port one at 140W and there are still 100W left for a tablet, a phone and a pair of headphones — no renegotiation blips, no throttled laptop when someone plugs in. That is a different product category from a travel brick, which is why nearly all of them sit on the desk with a mains cord rather than hanging off the wall. A desk that feeds a laptop plus three devices at once, or a household charging station: 240W, because the shared budget is the product and it is the only tier where a 140W laptop draw leaves everything else untouched. Does a 240W adapter charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro faster than a 140W one?
