Apple 70W vs 96W: the MacBook Air line and the MacBook Pro line.
Both are single-port PD 3.0 adapters that top out at 20V-class rails. The 70W is Apple's fast-charge spec for the MacBook Air and the base 14″ Pro; the 96W exists because higher-end 14″ Pro configurations ask for more than 70W.

Where the 70W wins
Portability and honesty about the Air. A MacBook Air never draws 96W — it requests what its charging circuit allows and the surplus sits idle — so on an Air the two adapters produce identical charge curves while the 70W takes up less bag. The same applies to an iPad Pro, which peaks around 30W, and to any phone. If the brick's job is to travel with a 13″ or 15″ Air, the 70W is the correct spec and the smaller one. Where the 96W wins
The 14″ MacBook Pro, and the argument for buying once. Higher-end 14″ configurations are specified with the 96W adapter, and while a 70W will charge them, it will not fast-charge them, and under a sustained export or compile the machine can consume most of what a 70W supply offers — leaving the battery flat or falling rather than climbing. The 96W also has a better cost-per-watt story: the extra 26W costs a small fraction more, and it is the difference between a brick that covers every Apple laptop except the 16″ and one that does not. Verdict
Buy the 96W. It fast-charges every Mac laptop except the 16″ Pro, it costs marginally more per watt than the 70W, and it removes the one failure mode that actually annoys people — a laptop losing charge while plugged in. If you own an Air today and might own a 14″ Pro later, the 96W is the brick that survives the transition. The exception: if this adapter lives permanently in a bag alongside a 13″ or 15″ MacBook Air and nothing larger, buy the 70W and enjoy the smaller, lighter body — it charges the Air exactly as fast, and the extra 26W would never be requested. Will the 96W adapter overcharge a MacBook Air?
No. USB-C Power Delivery is request-based: the Air asks for the profile it wants and draws nothing beyond it. A higher-rated adapter only means unused capability.
Do I need a special cable for the 96W adapter?
You need a USB-C cable rated for 5A, which for practical purposes means an e-marked cable — the same one you would use for any charging above 60W. Apple's MagSafe 3 cable also works with the MacBook Pro.
Can either adapter fast-charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro?
Neither can. Fast charge on the 16-inch machine requires the 140W adapter and its PD 3.1 28V rail. Both of these will charge it, just at ordinary speed.
