45W vs 65W: the cheapest jump into laptop class.

45W is the top of the phone-and-handheld tier. 65W is the bottom of the laptop tier — and because it is the highest-volume class on the market, it is usually the best watts-per-dollar buy on this entire site.

The 20V rail is the whole difference: 2.25A versus 3.25A. Ultrabooks negotiate 20V/3.25A as their standard contract, which is precisely why 65W and not 60W became the class name.

Where each one wins

45W wins on pocket size for a phone-first traveller. If the biggest thing you charge is a Galaxy S Ultra or a Steam Deck, a single-port 45W brick is the smallest thing that will run it at full speed, and it will not be the bottleneck.

65W wins on nearly every other axis. It runs a MacBook Air at fast-charge-adjacent speed, covers Dell XPS, ThinkPad and Spectre ultrabooks that ship with 60–65W bricks, and — because 65W is where multi-port GaN units cluster — usually gives you three ports for the price of a two-port 45W. On price per watt the 65W unit is typically the better buy outright, before you count the ports. Class detail: 45W adapters, 65W adapters, and laptop power adapters.

Buying 65W and keeping the 3A cable that came with your phone throws away the upgrade: a non-e-marked cable holds the link at 60W. Anything you intend to run at 65W sustained wants a 5A e-marked cable.

Verdict: 65W, and it is not close

Buy the 65W. On delivered watts it adds a whole device class (laptops) rather than a margin; on protocol it matches 45W feature-for-feature including PPS; on size the GaN bodies are within a few grams of each other; and on watts per dollar it is the best-value tier on the market because volume is highest there. The exception: a Samsung phone user who wants the absolute smallest single-port brick with guaranteed PPS and will never charge a laptop from it is genuinely better served by 45W, and Samsung's own unit ships with the 5A cable that spec requires. FAQ

Is 65W enough for a MacBook Pro 14-inch?

It will charge it, and comfortably during light work, but Apple ships 67W or 96W with that machine. Under sustained CPU or GPU load a 65W adapter loses ground to the battery.

Does a 65W charger charge a phone faster than a 45W one?

No. Phones cap out well below both. The difference only appears on laptops and on multi-port units where the extra budget keeps a second device at full speed.

Why do so many 65W chargers actually deliver 45W to one port?

Because the budget is shared. A 65W three-port unit typically gives 45W to port one once a second device is plugged in. Check the per-combination table before buying.
