MacBook charging, model by model.
Every modern MacBook charges over USB-C Power Delivery, so any certified adapter works — but only some of them fast-charge, and only one of them can feed a 16-inch MacBook Pro at full rate. Here is the whole ladder, plus how to check what yours is really pulling.

"Fast charge" on a Mac means roughly 0–50% in 30 minutes, and it is a firmware behaviour that only unlocks when the negotiated contract is large enough. A 15-inch Air on a 30W adapter charges perfectly well; it simply never enters the fast phase. Nothing is harmed either way — the machine negotiates what it can get, as covered in higher-wattage chargers.
The 140W special case
140W is the only rung that needs a different standard rather than a bigger number. It uses PD 3.1 Extended Power Range at 28V, which ordinary 100W-class PD cannot reach — 100W is 20V × 5A, and current is capped at 5A throughout, so the extra power has to come from voltage. Two consequences: a 100W charger will run and charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro but not at full rate, and 140W over USB-C requires an EPR-rated cable at both ends. MagSafe 3 itself is a convenience, not a requirement — it is a breakaway magnetic connector carrying the same PD contract. Any of the three USB-C ports on a MacBook Pro charges the machine at the same speed.
Checking what your Mac is actually drawing
Hold Option, click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then select Power in the sidebar. The AC Charger Information block reports the connected adapter's ID, its family, and — the number you want — Wattage. That figure is the negotiated contract, not the label on the brick, which makes it the definitive test for a cable problem: a 96W adapter reporting 60W is a 3A cable, and a 140W adapter reporting 100W is a non-EPR cable. Third-party adapters and battery health
Any UL or ETL listed GaN charger with the right wattage works, and above 65W it will be roughly half the size of Apple's equivalent. The specification to match is the PD profile, not the brand: for a 14-inch Pro you want a genuine 20V/5A rail, and for a 16-inch you want a 28V rail, which is far rarer. On battery care, macOS on Apple silicon runs Optimized Battery Charging and, on recent versions, offers an 80% limit. Leaving a Mac plugged in permanently is fine with those enabled; the firmware manages the cell rather than trickling it at 100% forever. FAQ
Can I charge a MacBook Pro with a 65W charger?
Yes. It charges more slowly and, under heavy load, may lose ground, but nothing is harmed — the Mac negotiates the largest contract the adapter offers.
Do I need Apple's own charger for a MacBook?
No. Any certified USB-C PD adapter with the right profile works. For the 16-inch Pro at full speed you specifically need PD 3.1 with a 28V rail and an EPR cable.
Is MagSafe 3 faster than USB-C on a MacBook?
No. Both carry the same PD contract at the same wattage. MagSafe adds a breakaway connector and frees a USB-C port.
Why does System Information show fewer watts than my charger's rating?
Because it reports the negotiated contract. A lower number usually means the cable is limiting current, or another port on a multi-port charger is taking a share.
