How we ranked these
Same five criteria as every list on this site: delivered watts sustained rather than peak, protocol correctness (a published rail table, PPS where claimed, and a verified 28V profile on anything advertising 140W), safety certification (UL or ETL listing), size and price per watt, and track record.
On a GaN list, watts per cubic inch does the real work — it is the only reason to pay the GaN premium. A 100W silicon desktop charger still works; it is simply three times the volume. FAQ
Is a GaN charger safer than a normal one?
Neither is inherently safer. Safety comes from certification and build quality, not the semiconductor. GaN's benefit is efficiency: less waste heat for the same output, and heat is what ages components.
Do GaN chargers charge faster?
No. A 65W GaN charger and a 65W silicon charger deliver the same 65W. GaN changes size and running temperature, not speed.
Which GaN charger should I buy if I only buy one?
A 100W-class three-port unit: a MacBook Pro 14 inch at full speed, any phone or tablet alongside it, and no second brick to travel with. Step up to 140W only for a 16 inch MacBook Pro or a 240W-class desk.
Does a 140W GaN charger need a special cable?
Yes. 140W uses the PD 3.1 28V rail, which only an EPR-rated cable marked for 240W may carry. A 100W 5A cable holds the link at 100W.
