140W GaN: a new voltage rail, not just more watts.
One hundred and forty watts is 28V at 5A — a rail that did not exist before USB-C PD 3.1 Extended Power Range. A 140W charger is therefore a different class of device from a 100W one, and it needs a cable to match. GaN is what keeps it the size of a deck of cards.
PD 3.1 and the 28V rail
PD 3.0 stopped at 20V and 5A, which is where the 100W ceiling comes from. PD 3.1 Extended Power Range adds three higher fixed rails — 28V (140W), 36V (180W) and 48V (240W) — all still at 5A. Raising voltage rather than current is deliberate: current is what heats connectors and cables, so pushing 140W at 28V/5A is thermally identical at the plug to pushing 100W at 20V/5A. The cable, however, must be rated for EPR operation, which in practice means a 240W-rated cable with the right e-marker.

Why GaN is not optional here
At 94% efficiency, a 140W supply still dissipates about 8.9W of heat at full load — as much as an entire 65W silicon charger wastes. Build the same thing at 89% and it is 17.3W, which is a fan-and-metal-chassis problem rather than a plastic-brick one. That is the practical reason essentially every 140W wall charger on the market is GaN: silicon at this output stops being a wall plug and starts being a desktop appliance with an inline cord. Who actually needs 140W: the 16″ MacBook Pro, which Apple specifies at 140W for fast charging; large mobile workstations and gaming laptops that ship with barrel adapters above 100W; and anyone running a laptop plus several devices who wants the laptop never to be the one that gets throttled. FAQ
Do I need 140W for a MacBook Pro 16-inch?
For Apple's fast-charge mode, yes — it requires a 140W PD 3.1 adapter. Lower-wattage adapters charge the machine normally, just more slowly.
Will a 140W charger hurt a phone or tablet?
No. Power Delivery is a negotiation: the device requests a profile and the charger supplies only that. A phone on a 140W brick draws its usual 20-25W.
Why does my 140W charger only reach 100W?
The cable is not EPR-rated. 140W requires a cable whose e-marker declares support for Extended Power Range, in practice a 240W-rated cable.
Is 140W the same as 140W total across ports?
Usually not. Most units deliver 140W only on the primary port when it is alone, and split a smaller allowance when other ports are occupied.
