100W GaN: the last stop before PD 3.1.

One hundred watts is not a marketing round number — it is 20V at 5A, the absolute ceiling of USB-C Power Delivery 3.0. Every charger above it uses a newer standard with higher voltages. That makes 100W the most compatible high-power tier you can buy.

Why the number is exactly 100

USB-C PD 3.0 defines four fixed voltage rails — 5V, 9V, 15V and 20V — and caps current at 5A. Twenty volts times five amps is 100W, and no PD 3.0 device can legally exceed it. Going higher required PD 3.1 Extended Power Range, which adds 28V, 36V and 48V rails. So 100W is a genuine architectural boundary: everything below it works with every USB-C device made since 2015, and the 5A current draw is what makes an e-marked cable mandatory.

Twelve watts of heat is a space heater in a plastic box; six is manageable behind a monitor. That is why 100W silicon designs were almost always desktop bricks with an inline cable, and 100W GaN designs are wall plugs. GaN vs silicon has the wider argument.

What a 100W desk charger replaces

The realistic job at this tier is not one device — it is four. A 100W four-port GaN unit typically allocates 100W to a single USB-C port when it is alone, then splits something like 65W plus 30W across two, or 45W/30W/20W across three. That covers:

  • MacBook Pro 14″ at 96W-class speed when it is the only thing plugged in
  • MacBook Air, XPS 13, ThinkPad or Spectre plus a phone, simultaneously and at full speed
  • iPad Pro at ~30W alongside a laptop
  • Galaxy S25 Ultra at 45W over PPS, if the unit advertises the right profile
  • Steam Deck at 45W plus a phone plus earbuds

What it cannot do is fast-charge a 16″ MacBook Pro, which asks for 140W over PD 3.1 — that is the 140W tier. Wattage-first shoppers should read the 100W wattage page.

5A means e-marked, no exceptions. A 100W charger on a 3A cable delivers 60W and says nothing about it. The cable needs an e-marker chip declaring 5A capability — see e-marked cables. Every 240W-rated cable also qualifies.

Is 100W the maximum a USB-C charger can deliver?

It is the maximum under PD 3.0, which is 20V at 5A. PD 3.1 Extended Power Range raises the ceiling to 240W using 28V, 36V and 48V rails.

Do I need a special cable for 100W?

Yes. 100W means 5A of current, which requires an e-marked cable. A standard 3A cable silently limits the charger to 60W.

Will a 100W charger damage a phone?

No. The phone negotiates its own profile and draws only what it requests, so the adapter's ceiling is irrelevant to it.

Can a 100W charger fast-charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro?

It will charge it, but Apple's fast-charge mode on that machine needs a 140W PD 3.1 adapter with a 28V rail.
