Best-of · Smallest footprint
The best minimalist chargers of 2026.
The minimalist test is not the smallest charger — it is the smallest charger you never have to supplement. One brick that covers a phone, a tablet and a laptop means the second adapter stays home, a bigger saving than a few cubic centimetres of housing.
How we ranked these
The five site-wide criteria are delivered watts, protocol correctness, safety certification, size and price per watt, and track record. On this list, size per watt is the ranking axis and everything else is a threshold to clear.
Size per watt is usable output divided by packed volume, prongs folded. That punishes two things fairly: a tiny 20W brick that forces a laptop charger into the bag as well, and rigid fixed prongs against an identical unit that folds flat, because packed volume is what a bag experiences. Protocol correctness stays a hard gate — one brick only works if the rails cover every device: 9V for phones, 15V for a docked handheld, 20V for a laptop.

The honest ranking logic: a 65W folding brick is roughly the volume of two stacked 20W bricks but replaces three chargers. Unless your entire kit is a phone, 65W is the minimalist answer and 20W is the false economy. GaN is what makes that true — a silicon 65W adapter would be three times the size (the GaN explainer).

FAQ
What is the smallest charger that can run a laptop?
A 65W GaN single-port unit, close in size to a 30W silicon brick from a few years ago. Below 45W a laptop charges slowly or loses ground under load.
Is one charger really enough for a phone, tablet and laptop?
One at a time, yes, on a 65W single-port unit. If you need two devices charging simultaneously overnight, a three-port 65W unit costs almost no extra volume and solves it.
Do folding prongs make a charger meaningfully smaller?
In packed volume, yes. Rigid prongs add roughly 15mm of unusable depth and catch on bag linings; the folding version of the same charger is the better travel buy.
Is a 20W charger a minimalist choice?
Only for a phone-only kit. If a laptop or large tablet comes along, a 20W brick forces a second charger into the bag and the total volume goes up, not down.
