The Philippines: your plug fits, and that is the danger.
The worst voltage mismatch in the world for an American traveler hides in plain sight. Philippine sockets are Type A and Type B — the same flat pins as home — but the supply behind them is 220V at 60Hz. Any US appliance that is not dual-voltage plugs in perfectly and then destroys itself.
Why this combination is uniquely hazardous
Everywhere else the wrong voltage announces itself through the wrong plug shape: Britain's 230V sits behind a Type G socket, Europe's behind round pins. The Philippines removes that interlock — the socket takes a US plug and the wall is at 220V, 83% above the 120V your device expects. At 60Hz, the same as the US, even the hum sounds right.

The arithmetic, so the warning is not abstract
A resistive heating element has fixed resistance. Power equals voltage squared over resistance, so going from 120V to 220V multiplies the power by (220 ÷ 120)², about 3.4. A 1,500W US hair dryer briefly attempts roughly 5,000W: the nichrome element glows past its design temperature, the housing scorches, and either the element or the breaker opens. There is no warning.
Motors fail as fast: a 120V AC motor on 220V draws excess current and burns out its windings. Neither failure is fixed by a plug adapter, which changes shape and nothing else.

The dual-voltage replacements worth buying first
For the categories that fail, replacement beats conversion. A dual-voltage travel hair dryer rated 100–240V weighs a few hundred grams; a step-down converter able to run a 1,500W dryer weighs several kilos and still runs hot. Do I need a plug adapter for the Philippines?
No. Philippine sockets are Type A and B, the same flat pins as the US, so US plugs fit directly. The problem is the 220V behind them, which only affects devices that are not dual-voltage.
Why is the Philippines dangerous for US appliances?
