Amazon Basics 20W: boring, certified, sufficient.

A 20W USB-C brick has one job — deliver the 9V rail an iPhone asks for — and the house-brand version does it for the least money of anything carrying a UL or ETL mark. The catch: the published specification is thin.

The honest framing: this is a tier, not a model

House-brand chargers are re-sourced: this quarter's unit need not share an internal design with last year's, and the part number changes without announcement. So this page reviews the tier. Stable: one USB-C port, a 20W ceiling, USB-C PD, a certification mark. Not stable: the profile ladder, a 12V rail, and whether PPS appears anywhere.

A 20W PD charger that publishes its rails is a known quantity; one printing only "20W fast charging" is a guess.

What it's genuinely good at

Cost per certified watt. The cheapest mark-carrying charger for a drawer, a guest room or a suitcase. The counterfeit problem here is real — see avoiding counterfeit listings — and a first-party house brand sidesteps the worst of it.

Right size for the job. An iPhone peaks around 20–27W; the gap between a 20W and a 30W brick is minutes to 50%. For a bedside charger, 20W is no compromise.

Replaceability. Losing one costs nothing emotionally, which matters for the charger that lives in a carry-on.

Where it falls short

The published specification is the weak point. Spec-first brands print voltage/current pairs; this tier often does not. If you need a specific rail — a 12V/1.5A accessory profile — buy a brand that prints it.

No PPS, and do not expect it. A Galaxy S25 Ultra needs 45W PPS for Super Fast Charging 2.0; a base S25 wants 25W. Neither is served — start at Samsung's 25W adapter or the 45W PPS class.

It cannot dock a Switch. The dock wants 15V/2.6A — 39W. A 20W charger serves handheld mode only; the Switch charger page has the profile.

One port. In a travel bag that is a false economy: a two-port 30W unit removes a cable.

Device fit

Full speed: every iPhone from the 12 through the 16 line, AirPods, Apple Watch, Kindle, base iPad at ~20W, Meta Quest 3 at 18W. Slowly: iPad Pro (~30W peak), MacBook Air, Galaxy S25. The one line to check: find the UL or ETL mark in the listing photos of the housing itself, not in the bullet copy: seller text is not a testing house's mark. If neither photos nor manual show one, buy a different charger.

FAQ

Is the Amazon Basics 20W as fast as Apple's 20W?

For an iPhone, effectively yes — both deliver the 9V rail the phone requests. Apple documents its behaviour; the house brand often does not.

Does it support PPS for Samsung phones?

Assume not. PPS is what Samsung needs for 45W Super Fast Charging 2.0, and these listings do not advertise it. A Galaxy charges at standard PD speeds.

Will 20W charge an iPad or MacBook?

Both charge, but only the base iPad is genuinely served: an iPad Pro peaks near 30W and a MacBook Air wants 30W or more.

Is the model number on the listing reliable?
