Apple 40W Dynamic: 40 sustained, 60 in bursts.
Apple's newest phone adapter carries two numbers because it does two things: it holds 40W indefinitely, and it will step up to 60W for a short window when the device on the other end asks for it.
What "dynamic" means here
Conventional USB-C PD chargers advertise a fixed menu of rails — 5V, 9V, 15V, 20V — and the device picks one. The 40W Dynamic Power Adapter (Max 60W) instead uses the adjustable-voltage side of PD 3.1 to track the device's request continuously, which is what lets it exceed its nameplate 40W for a limited, thermally bounded burst of up to 60W. The sustained rating is the honest one: 40W is what the adapter can hold, 60W is what it can lend.
This is the first Apple phone brick where the burst is the point. It exists because the iPhone 17 generation can absorb far more than the 20–27W that defined the iPhone era before it, and Apple's fastest published charge times assume an adapter of this class. What it is not
- Not a 60W charger. Sizing a laptop around the burst figure is a mistake — plan for 40W.
- Not multi-port. One USB-C, and the whole budget goes to it.
- Not a MacBook Pro adapter. A 14″ Pro under load wants 96W.
- Not an upgrade for older iPhones. If your phone caps at 27W, the extra headroom changes nothing measurable.

Buy it if you own an iPhone 17 and want Apple's fastest published charge time from the smallest possible brick. It sustains 40W and bursts to as much as 60W when the connected device requests it. Treat 40W as the number you can rely on and 60W as a short-window peak that depends on temperature and battery level.
Do older iPhones charge faster with the 40W Dynamic adapter?
No meaningful difference. An iPhone 16 or earlier caps near 27W, so it draws the same from this adapter as from a 30W one. The extra capability only matters on hardware that can request it.
Can the 40W Dynamic adapter charge a MacBook?
It charges a MacBook Air at 40W, which is fine for overnight or light use but below the 67W threshold Apple's fast charging needs. For a MacBook Pro it is an emergency charger, not a daily one.
