Official vs third-party chargers: three checks that matter, and brand is not one.
The question is never who made it. It is whether the unit carries a genuine safety listing, publishes its Power Delivery profile table, and — if a Lightning cable is in the chain — whether that cable is MFi certified. Those three tests sort chargers better than logos do.

The three checks, in order
Safety listing first. A charger connects mains voltage to something you hold. UL or ETL listing means a laboratory tested the isolation between primary and secondary sides; the mark should be moulded or printed with a file number, not stuck on. Profile table second. A trustworthy adapter states its rails — 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/3A, 20V/5A — and, if multi-port, what each combination yields. Vagueness is the tell. MFi third, and only for Lightning. MFi certifies the cable, not the wall adapter: irrelevant to USB-C-to-USB-C, essential for an iPhone 14 or earlier. Related reading: charger safety and spotting counterfeit listings.
Where first-party still earns the premium
Two situations. When the profile is unusual — Apple's 140W PD 3.1 with its 28V rail, or Samsung's 45W PPS path with a bundled 5A cable — the first-party unit removes a whole class of "does this implementation actually work" risk. And when the purchase is really a warranty transaction: a machine in for service, or a fleet with one approved part number. Outside those, third-party GaN wins on size, ports, cable inclusion and cost per watt without giving up a certification.
Verdict
Buy the reputable third-party adapter for the majority of purchases. A certified GaN unit from an established brand matches first-party safety, beats it on size and ports, usually includes the cable that Apple charges extra for, and costs less per watt. Brand loyalty buys nothing measurable at 20W to 100W. The exception, stated precisely: buy first-party when the profile is at the edge of the standard — a 16″ MacBook Pro needing PD 3.1 at 28V, or a Galaxy Ultra needing a verified PPS window with the right cable — and whenever a warranty or support relationship is the actual product. FAQ
Do third-party chargers void an Apple warranty?
No. Using a certified third-party USB-C adapter does not void a warranty. Damage caused by a defective accessory is a separate matter, which is exactly why the UL or ETL listing check matters.
What does MFi actually certify?
MFi covers Lightning connectors and cables, not wall adapters. It matters when charging an iPhone 14 or earlier; for a USB-C to USB-C setup it is irrelevant and its absence means nothing.
How do I check a UL listing is real?
Look for the mark moulded or printed on the housing with a file number, then search that number in the certifier's public database. Counterfeits usually reproduce the logo but not a number that resolves.
