Surface: Surface Connect for full speed, USB-C at 60W and up.
Every modern Surface has two ways in — the magnetic Surface Connect port that carries the OEM adapter's full rating, and a USB-C port that accepts standard PD. Microsoft's guidance for the USB-C route is 60W or more, which makes a 65W GaN brick the one third-party purchase worth making.
Which port your Surface really wants
Surface Connect is the magnetic proprietary port. It carries the wattage Microsoft designed the machine around — 65W-class for Surface Pro and Surface Laptop, higher for Surface Laptop Studio — and it is the only connector that also drives the Surface Dock.
USB-C PD works on Surface Pro 7 and later, Surface Laptop 3 and later, Surface Go 2 and later, Surface Laptop Go and Surface Pro X. On those machines a certified 60W+ USB-C charger charges the device normally, including while it is in use. Below 60W you are in trickle territory: the tablet charges when idle and holds or falls when the screen is bright and the CPU is busy.
The exceptions. Surface Book and Surface Studio-class hardware were built around Surface Connect and their discrete graphics draw more than a USB-C contract will comfortably supply — keep the OEM brick. Surface Pro 4/5/6-era devices have no USB-C charging path at all.

Don't waste money on
Third-party Surface Connect cables and bricks from unknown sellers. The connector is proprietary and the magnetic contacts are the part that fails. If you need Surface Connect, buy Microsoft's.
A 30W charger "because it fits". It fits, it is safe, and it will disappoint you on a Surface Pro doing real work.

FAQ
Can I charge a Surface Pro with a USB-C charger?
Yes on Surface Pro 7 and later. Microsoft recommends 60W or more for full-speed charging while the device is in use.
Is Surface Connect faster than USB-C?
On most Surfaces the two are comparable once you use a 60W+ USB-C charger. On Surface Book and Laptop Studio class hardware, Surface Connect carries more power and remains the correct choice.
Will a 45W USB-C charger hurt my Surface?
No. It simply charges more slowly, and under heavy use it may only hold the battery level rather than raise it.
Does the Surface Dock replace a charger?
Yes — it powers the device over Surface Connect while providing display and USB ports. It does not charge over USB-C.
