Is charging overnight bad for your phone?

Not in the way the internet says. Your phone stopped trickle-charging years ago — it terminates the charge and then runs off the wall. What overnight charging really does is hold the battery near full for eight hours, and that only matters much if it is also warm.

What a phone is doing at 3am

Lithium-ion charging has two phases. Constant current pushes maximum amps until the cell reaches its top voltage (about 4.2–4.45V depending on chemistry). Constant voltage then holds that level while current tapers, and the charger terminates when current falls below roughly 3% of capacity. That happens well before you wake up. From that point, the phone is powered by the adapter, not by the battery — and when self-discharge drops it to about 95%, it takes a short top-off back to 100%.

What is true: time at a high state of charge accelerates calendar ageing, faster when warm. That is the real mechanism behind the advice, and why every major platform now ships a feature to shorten that window.

Heat is the variable that actually matters

A cell held at 100% at 25°C ages slowly; the same cell at 40°C ages several times faster. So the sleeping arrangement matters more than the charging: a phone under a pillow, under a duvet or face-down on a soft mattress has no way to shed heat. Put it on a hard nightstand, out of the bedding, and most of the theoretical risk disappears. The same logic applies to the adapter — see why chargers get hot for what warm should feel like.

If you want one change, make it this one: take the phone out of the bed and off the sofa cushion, not off the charger. Bedding is the only part of the typical overnight setup that meaningfully raises cell temperature, and temperature is the term the ageing curve is most sensitive to.

Is there a fire risk?

With a certified adapter and an undamaged cable, the risk is very small — these are sealed, fused, isolated converters that spend their whole life plugged in. The realistic risks are avoidable: counterfeit bricks with inadequate isolation between mains and low-voltage sides, a cable with a crushed or chewed section, and charging on a flammable surface with no airflow. Buy units carrying a real UL or ETL mark (what those marks certify), and learn the listing signals in avoiding counterfeit listings. Power banks deserve more caution than wall chargers, because they contain cells of their own.

So should you change anything?

If your phone supports Optimized or Adaptive charging, leave it on — it costs nothing and removes most of the high-state-of-charge hours. Keeping the phone three years or more? The 80% cap on newer iPhones and Samsung's Protect Battery are worth enabling, trading 20% of daily range for a slower capacity decline. Two things not to worry about: charger wattage and overnight use of a big brick.
