ROG Ally: 65W, and the cable is part of the spec.

ASUS ships a 65W USB-C PD adapter — 20V at 3.25A. That current is above the 3A a plain USB-C cable is rated for, so the Ally is one of the few handhelds where a bargain cable silently costs you 5W of headroom and a Turbo-mode drain.

Numbers first

Maximum input: 65W (20V/3.25A). Protocol: standard USB-C Power Delivery. Both the original Ally and the Ally X negotiate the same 65W contract. In Turbo mode the SoC is allowed a 25–30W package budget, and the screen, fans, SSD and Wi-Fi sit on top of that — which is why a 45W supply keeps the console alive but slowly empties the battery during a demanding session.

Cable: anything above 60W requires a 5A e-marked USB-C cable. A generic 3A cable caps the contract at 60W, and on a device that wants 65W that shows up as a slow drain rather than an error message. Use the ASUS cable, or a marked 100W/5A one — see e-marker cables.

Ports: on the original Ally, charging shares the combined USB-C / ROG XG Mobile connector. On the Ally X there are two USB-C ports, one of them USB4/Thunderbolt-class, and either will charge.

Test it in two minutes: plug in, set Turbo mode, run a demanding title for ten minutes and watch the battery percentage. Rising is correct. Flat means you are at the limit of the supply or the cable. Falling means the charger, the cable or a hub's passthrough is under-delivering.

Don't waste money on

A 140W or 240W adapter. The Ally will not take more than 65W. That money is only justified if a 16″ laptop shares the charger — see best laptop chargers.

Undocumented "gaming handheld" bricks. What you need is a published 20V/3.25A line and a safety listing, which the mainstream GaN brands print openly.

A cheap hub as a dock. Passthrough ratings below 65W turn into mid-game drain. Read the hub's own PD figure before blaming the adapter — more in USB-C laptop charging and slow charging fixes.

FAQ

Can I charge the ROG Ally with a 45W charger?

Yes, and it is safe, but in Turbo mode the console can consume more than 45W. Expect a slow drain during heavy play and full charging when idle or asleep.

Does the ROG Ally need a special cable?

It needs a 5A e-marked USB-C cable to receive the full 65W. A standard 3A cable limits the contract to 60W.

Will a 100W charger damage the Ally?

No. The console requests 65W and the adapter supplies exactly that. Extra capacity sits unused.

Can I charge the Ally X from either USB-C port?

Yes. The Ally X has two USB-C ports and both support charging; the original Ally charges through its combined USB-C / XG Mobile connector.
