PPS lets the phone request voltage in 20mV steps instead of taking a fixed 9V or 15V rail, which is how the XL reaches 37W without cooking its own regulator — the conversion loss moves into the adapter. Cable: any USB-C to USB-C cable rated 3A/60W. No e-marker chip, no 240W cable, nothing special — at 37W you are drawing well under 3A. A USB-A to USB-C cable caps you at 5V and roughly 7.5–12W no matter what the charger is rated for.

Don't waste money on
A 100W or 140W brick for the phone alone. The Pixel asks for 37W maximum and gets exactly that from a 45W unit. Extra watts are only worth paying for if a laptop shares the charger — in which case start at 65W.
"Quick Charge 3.0" chargers. Qualcomm's old protocol is not what a Pixel negotiates; you fall back to plain 5V/3A. Buy PD with PPS printed on the label.
Wireless stands, if speed is the goal. Qi charging on a Pixel runs well under the wired figure and dumps the difference as heat. Fine bedside, wrong for a 20-minute top-up.

Does the Pixel 9 need a PPS charger?
To hit its rated peak, yes. A fixed-rail PD charger still charges the phone, just below the quoted 27W or 37W figure. Look for 'PPS' and a range such as 3.3-11V on the label.
Can I use a 65W or 100W laptop charger on a Pixel 9?
Yes, and it is completely safe. The phone requests its own profile and the adapter supplies exactly that. It will not charge any faster than a 45W unit.
Why does my Pixel charge slowly from a USB-A port?
USB-A cannot carry a PD contract, so the phone is limited to 5V. That caps you around 7.5-12W regardless of the charger's advertised total.
Is the 30W Google charger enough for a Pixel 9 Pro XL?
It charges it correctly, but the XL's 37W peak needs a 45W-class PPS adapter. On 30W you lose a few minutes on a 0-50% fill, not hours.
