USB-C vs Lightning: your iPhone already decided, the cable is your problem.
iPhone 15 and later is USB-C. iPhone 14 and earlier is Lightning. The adapter you buy is the same either way — what changes is the cable coming out of it, and whether that cable is MFi certified.

The mistake that costs Lightning owners half their speed
Fast charging a Lightning iPhone has always required a USB-C to Lightning cable plugged into a USB-C Power Delivery adapter. The familiar USB-A to Lightning cable cannot negotiate PD at all, so it tops out around 12W no matter how large the brick behind it is. If an iPhone 13 or 14 takes an hour and a half to reach half charge, that cable is almost always the reason — not the adapter. And because Lightning cables carry an authentication chip, MFi certification is a real check here in a way it never is for USB-C. What USB-C changed on the phone side
Three things beyond the plug shape. Data: the standard iPhone 15 and 16 models still run USB 2.0 speeds over the new connector, while the Pro models moved to 10 Gbps — a genuine difference if you move video off the phone. Power out: a USB-C iPhone can supply a few watts to accessories such as earbuds, which Lightning could not. Verdict
Standardise on USB-C. Buy a 30W-class USB-C adapter and USB-C to USB-C cables as the household default: they cover every current iPhone, every iPad, every Mac, every Android phone and most accessories, and they are the only connector with a future. There is no scenario where buying more Lightning gear makes sense in 2026. The exception you must handle: if anyone in the house still carries an iPhone 14 or earlier — or an AirPods case with a Lightning port — keep one MFi-certified USB-C to Lightning cable plugged into that same adapter. Which iPhones use USB-C?
The iPhone 15 generation was the first, and every model released since uses USB-C. iPhone 14 and everything earlier back to the iPhone 5 uses Lightning.
Can I fast-charge an iPhone 13 with a USB-A cable?
No. Fast charging requires USB-C Power Delivery, which a USB-A to Lightning cable cannot negotiate. You need a USB-C to Lightning cable and a 20W or larger USB-C adapter.
Do I need an MFi cable for a USB-C iPhone?
No. MFi applies to Lightning connectors. For a USB-C iPhone, any USB-IF-compliant USB-C to USB-C cable rated for the wattage you need will work correctly.
