The iPhone 17 is the first iPhone that wants more than 30W.
Every iPhone before it topped out in the 20–27W band. The 2025 lineup moved the ceiling into the 40W class and Apple shipped a new adapter to match — the 40W Dynamic (60W Max). If you are still charging from a 20W brick, this is the one generation where an upgrade is real.
The spec, in four lines
Wattage: 40W class. Apple's own claim — up to 50% in 20 minutes — is made with the 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, which sustains 40W and is rated to burst to 60W on request. Apple does not publish a peak-draw figure for the phone itself, so treat 40W as the number to buy and anything above 60W as decoration.
Protocol: USB-C Power Delivery. The headline speed uses PD 3.1 with Adjustable Voltage Supply, which is what lets the adapter track the phone's request instead of stepping between fixed rails.
Cable: USB-C to USB-C. Any 3A cable carries 40W comfortably — you do not need a 5A e-marked cable at this wattage.
If you use less: nothing breaks. A 20W adapter still charges it at the old iPhone speed, roughly 50% in half an hour.

Don't waste money on
A 100W+ single-port brick "for future-proofing". The phone will negotiate the same 40W-class contract it would from a 40W unit; you are paying for watts no device in your hand can request.
A 5A e-marked cable. Those exist for 100W+ laptops. At 40W a standard USB-C to C cable is electrically identical in behaviour — see the cable guide.

FAQ
Is the 20W adapter from my old iPhone still fine?
Yes — it charges the phone safely at the speed every iPhone charged at until 2025. You lose the newer fast-charge claim and the 25W MagSafe rate, nothing else.
Does a 140W MacBook charger charge it faster?
No. Watts above the phone's own ceiling are never drawn. It is perfectly safe, just pointless as a dedicated phone charger.
Do I need a new cable for the faster charging?
No. A standard USB-C to USB-C cable handles this wattage. Cable ratings only start to matter above 60W.
Why does charging slow down after about 80%?
Deliberate. Lithium cells take the last fifth of their capacity at a reduced rate to limit heat and wear, so peak-wattage claims are always quoted to 50%.
