Chargers at the bottom of the market are built around USB-A ports, and USB-A has a ceiling no cable or phone can raise: it holds 5 volts and varies only the current, so the whole wattage story is one multiplication.

Three honest scenarios. The emergency replacement: your charger is in a hotel two cities back and the shop in front of you sells one brand — a certified 10–12W unit gets a phone through the night. The disposable spare for a suitcase, a car or a shared house. Anyone charging a device that speaks USB-C Power Delivery — by now almost every phone, tablet, handheld and laptop sold. The step up to a certified 20W PD cube is small in money and large in minutes, and the step to a 65W GaN unit changes what the charger can do at all. Will a Protege charger fast-charge a modern phone?

Only from a USB-C port whose housing prints a 9V rail at 20W or more. A standard USB-A port cannot, whatever the packaging says.

Are cheap discount-retail chargers dangerous?

Not inherently. A listed budget charger has passed the same lab tests as an expensive one; an unlisted unit from any brand is the thing to avoid.

What can a 5W or 10W charger actually charge properly?

Is it worth upgrading from a USB-A travel charger?
