Apple 12W USB: the old iPad brick, replaced.

If the white USB-A cube that came with your iPad has died, the replacement is not another 12W. It is a 20W USB-C adapter and a new cable — and the result is faster than the original ever was.

Start here: what replaces it

The Apple 12W USB Power Adapter (model A1401) was discontinued in favour of USB-C. The direct modern equivalent is the 20W USB-C adapter, which charges every iPad faster than the 12W did, and the 30W if the tablet is an iPad Air or iPad Pro. The catch is the connector: the 12W had a USB-A socket, so your old USB-A to Lightning cable will not fit a USB-C brick. Budget for a USB-C to Lightning or USB-C to USB-C cable at the same time. A single 5.2V rail at 2.4A, with no negotiation of any kind. It was the biggest USB-A brick Apple shipped and, in the 2012–2019 window, a genuine upgrade over the 5W cube — it roughly halved iPad charge times. What it never had was Power Delivery, and that is the line that dates it.

No USB-A charger can fast-charge any iPhone, at any wattage. Fast charging on iPhone is defined as USB-C PD at 20W or more, so a 12W, 18W or even 24W USB-A brick is always the slow path. Replacing the adapter means replacing the cable too.

What it still does fine

  • Charges older iPads overnight without complaint, if the unit itself is healthy.
  • Runs AirPods cases, an Apple Watch puck, a Kindle, and any accessory that asks for 5V.
  • Serves as a USB-A port for legacy cables you have not replaced yet.

What it cannot do: fast-charge any iPhone since the iPhone 8, run an iPad Pro at its 30W peak, charge a MacBook at all, or deliver anything other than 5V. Compare the two connector eras in USB-A vs USB-C, and the raw speed difference in 5W vs 20W.

Verdict

Do not hunt for a replacement 12W. It is a 5V-only brick from a pre-PD era, and any certified 20–30W USB-C adapter beats it on every device you own for similar money. Keep the old one in a drawer for the Watch puck and accessories. Class page: 12W adapters.

Can I still use my Apple 12W USB adapter?

Yes, if the unit is undamaged. It safely charges older iPads, AirPods cases, an Apple Watch puck and accessories at 5.2V. It just cannot fast-charge any modern iPhone or iPad, because it has no Power Delivery.

What replaced the Apple 12W USB power adapter?
